Qld: Steve hits Cairns with damage reports coming in

Cyclone Steve has crossed the far north Queensland coast at Cairns tonight with reports
of roof damage, power blackouts and fallen trees already coming in.

But emergency workers are not being allowed to respond to calls for assistance until
the cyclone has passed.

A spokesman at the Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre in Brisbane says that once the cylone
has crossed the coast, it's expected to become a rain depression.

Winds up to 150 kilometres per hour have been reported with the cyclone, rated as category 2.
