Fed: ACTU tells government to wait on free trade negotiations

The ACTU has called on the HOWARD Government to delay its response to world trade negotiations.

The peak union body says the negotiations could lead to reduced national control ofkey industries and public services.

The federal government is due to respond to the World Trade Organisation by March 31regarding claims for foreign companies to take over Australian public and community services.

ACTU President SHARAN BURROW says Australia should postpone its response to the GeneralAgreement on Trade in Services.

She says any agreement could potentially undermine a range of services.

Ms BURROW says health, housing, education, childcare, water, energy, media, postaland telecommunications services could all be affected.
